Taufers Ski Trip

The BMC Lab teamed up with LBB for a winter retreat in Taufers, enjoying a few days of skiing, snow, and good company. With perfect conditions on the slopes and plenty of après-ski fun, the trip was a great chance to relax and recharge. Whether racing down the mountain or warming up with a drink afterward, everyone had a fantastic time. A big thanks to the organizers—we’re already looking forward to the next trip!

Welcome Lorenzo!

Lorenzo Petrella

We’re excited to welcome Lorenzo to the lab! He joins us having already done a student project with LBB, so he's a familiar face! Looking forward to having him as part of the team—be sure to say hello!

SMPS2025

BMC attended the Single Molecule Protein Sequencing conference in Bolzano this January, with Justin presenting on the last day. Justin showcased his research, sharing insights into interfacial nanopores. His talk highlighted how these nanopores function, steps taken to optimize their performance, and translocation data across various pore sizes. The presentation sparked engaging discussions and showcased our lab’s contributions to the field of nanopore sensing. Congratulations to Justin on a great presentation!

Meet SensETH team!

SensETH 2025
SensETH Team

ETH Zurich joins the SensUs Competition for the first time in 2025! This year's challenge is to develop biosensors for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Read more about the team and SensUs competition here: https://bmc.ethz.ch/SensETH.html

Welcome Justin!

Justin is our first PhD student at BMC. He completed his Master’s research in Ulrich Keyser’s lab at Cambridge, where he worked on nanopore sensors. In September 2024, he joined us to pursue his PhD, focusing on protein sensing with nanopores. We’re excited to have him on the team!

PhD and Postdoc Positions

N

We are looking for talented PhD students who want to dive into cutting-edge projects and make impactful contributions.

Postdocs considering a career in academia who are seeking fellowship opportunities, feel free to reach out regarding potential postdoctoral positions.

BMC Launched!

In January 2024 we launched the new laboratory of Single-Molecules and Single-Cell Biophysics at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBT), Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET), at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

We are aiming to develop tools and technologies to understand biological processes at the molecular level in living cells. We will use state-of-the-art techniques such as nanopore microscopy for single-molecule imaging, and single-cell manipulation to study the structure, function, and dynamics of biomolecules in living cells. We will also collaborate with other research groups and institutions across Switzerland and beyond, to tackle challenges in the fields of cell engineering and cell therapies.

We are very excited to start this new laboratory and to explore the exciting world of single cells and single molecules. We hope to make significant contributions to the scientific community and to society, by uncovering the molecular mechanisms of life and disease.
